In 1916, the PLANTERS^® brand held a contest to design a brand mascot. A 13-year-old boy named Antonio Gentile from Suffolk, Virginia submitted a drawing of a friendly, anthropomorphic peanut with arms, legs, and a cane. His sketch won the contest.
